Find Your Fierce..a life long path of discovering your fierce.

I AM FIERCE! Say it. Say it out loud. Look yourself in the eye in a mirror and say it confidently; 'I AM FIERCE!'

Believe me, you are, without a doubt a beautiful, strong, powerful, fascinating, fierce woman. I don't have to meet you to know this. We are women. We are strong, we have to be. We are the makers, the creators, the no bullshit takers. What is more frightening, more awe inspiring, than a momma bear protecting her cubs? That is what we are. And we are that not only for our children, but for our friends, our family, complete strangers. Within each of us lies that fierce. A ferocity that can not be squelched. Sometimes we simply need to be reminded of it, shown the path back to it. For me boudoir is one of the paths to your fierce.

I love being a boudoir photographer. I love creating beautiful, intimate, fierce photographs of women. But more than that I love being part of the process of a woman finding her fierce. I've had the privilege of being part of that process for hundreds of women. And it's amazing, empowering every single time. It's amazing to watch my clients come into my studio feeling a bit nervous, a bit insecure about such an intimate photography session, and then seeing them leave my studio walking a bit taller, with a bit more of a swing in their hips, a twinkle in their eye, they are feeling FIERCE! Once they've felt that, there is nothing that can take it away.

It's not only when I'm photographing my clients that I find myself in discussions empowering women. As a woman I feel it is part of my path in the Universe to empower every woman I can. And so the Universe brings me women in need of a bit of a push. I believe it's my willingness to 'lift the veneer', show them that beneath what they see publicly of me, under the shine, I am a woman, just as they are. I have fears, faults, shadows and skeletons. But I do not allow those things to stop me. They do not make me less, in fact for me, they make me more. If I think back to the woman I was in my 20's, she never could have imagined the woman I am at 45 (46 in April, YES!). The sum of my parts makes me who I am. No one else has that exact magical mix. I do not say this in a conceited, vainglorious way. I do not think I am better than the person standing next to me. I simply know, without a doubt, that I am unique. I am the sum of my parts. A unique mix in the universe. We all are. As Carl Sagan said: "We're all made of star stuff". (yes, I'm a nerd, that's one piece of the sum of my parts) Do not compare yourself to those around you. Raise each other up! We are all amazing! Help the women around you find their fierce! When you are fierce, when you own it, the women around you feel it. They will pick up on that and know that it is safe for them to feel it as well. This is how we will inspire each other.

So go on, right now, say it loud:

I am FIERCE!!

Did you say it? Good. Feel it. Let it sink in and revel in that.

This is the start of a blog series I'm going to do featuring some amazingly inspiring and fierce women. Read their stories. See yourself in their stories. Realize that no matter what is being thrown at you, you are amazing. Lean on your fierce friends when you need to. Reach out to the women that surround you. And be a woman that others know they can rely on. Raise each other up. Find your fierce.

I've asked several women to answer some questions for me. These are intimate, soul bearing questions. It's in lifting our veneer that we can show other women that they too can be fierce.

I met the woman I'm about to introduce you to around 9 years ago. This woman amazes me. She has dealt with more shit in her life than should be thrown at one person. And she perseveres. She rises to the occasion and deals with all of it with grace. She'll tell you she doesn't. But that's the veneer, isn't it? We always have this fear of someone seeing beneath our veneer. But it's rare to see the complete disorganized shit show that we all have going on from time to time. All right, sometimes it does not feel like we haven't been a shit show in a REALLY long time. But we're all dealing with something. We all have our own little shit show going on at any given time. It's OK. It's how you deal with your personal shit show that makes you amazing.

So now meet Christine. My amazing, talented, thoughtful, graceful, spirited and yes, incredibly FIERCE friend:

How do you define fierce?
Going beyond your greatest fears (or directly through them, if necessary) with intention.
My particular journey has yielded many opportunities to grow my fierceness:
  • avoiding creaky floorboards while quietly escaping my rapist’s house once he finally fell asleep;
  • mustering my 10 year old courage to touch my father’s cold cheek while he was lying in his casket to know for certain he was dead so that I could move forward;
  • making it appear to my children that I was eating when money was so tight that I could only feed four…not five.
  • promising my daughter that I would ‘make it stop’ during the minutes she lost her speech from a massive stroke ~ even though I had no idea how I would;
  • And a million moments in between.

Who do you think is fierce? Who inspires you?
My women friends.
The one who lived without running water and built her house with her own hands one room at a time in order to live within her means. The one who is not afraid of her femininity and wears it without apology.  My daughter who fought with everything she had to recover all but her pinky finger after a right cerebral artery stroke that certainly would have killed me. Or the friend who refused to let the murder of her husband harden her but who chose, instead, to let it strengthen her compassion. The one who valued her partnership with her husband so dearly that she stood beside him through many failed hospitalizations for his substance abuse until, together, they found the one that worked. Or the pediatric oncologist who saves kids’ lives every day or helps them to die gracefully.
Every one of them…and more.

Who reminds you that you are fierce?
My life requires that I remind myself.  This makes me fiercer than most.
And when that fails? Other women. Always other women when things approach impossible.

What do you do when you aren't feeling particularly fierce?
I do whatever is counterintuitive to remind myself that I am alive and, in fact, flourishing.
  • If I feel ugly, I put on my curvy dress and take myself out for a glass of pinot noir.
  • If I feel inadequate in my writing, I find an open mic and read whatever I have.
  • If I feel burdened, I reach out to someone to offer them care.
  • If I feel trapped, I place a joyous hummingbird tattoo on my ribcage near my heart to invite life and light to take residence there.
I do whatever is necessary so that I never, never lose my fierce again.

Can you share a moment when you felt least fierce? What did you do to come out of that?
There was a moment at the end of my abusive marriage that I decided I couldn’t go on. I wasn’t going to actively end my life.  I was just going to crawl into bed until I didn’t exist anymore.  It was that simple.
I didn’t speak.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t eat.
And then my 5 year old daughter carried two pair of my black shoes to where I was lying and asked me with urgency which pair they should bury me in.
This is the moment that my fierceness was reignited.
I did the impossible. With virtually no life left in me I lifted my emaciated body out of bed all by myself to show my daughter what it means to fight.

Is there a moment in your life when you felt particularly fierce, like you could take on the world? Can you share that?
Yesterday.  Which is ever so strange. It was an average day.  Rather a long one, in fact, without any time to care for myself or bother with makeup.  As I was turning down my bed to go to sleep and thinking about the writing I had done that morning I caught a glimpse of myself in my full length mirror with the cherry frame. Jeans with tattered pockets. Gray ribbed tank. Braless as I allow my tattoo to heal. Tibetan prayer beads hanging between my breasts with a loose, colorful scarf thrown over them. New violet tint in my wildly curly hair. Barefoot. Dark, soulful, alluring eyes. Insanely sensual. And with a crooked smile that wants to be. I sat down to have a look and realized in that moment just how powerful I am. There was no vitriol. No charge. No vehemence. Just a quiet I-am-going-to-fill-this-fucking-planet-with-my-authenticity kind of fierce.
These moments come infrequently in my life; a handful in total so far. And I cherish them in a way that makes me want to store them in colorful bottles crafted from sea glass on window sills in every room so that my light pours through them and splashes my grace into the world everywhere.

What is the one thing you can do or think about that reminds you that you are fierce?
I remember that I have lived a life that has largely silenced me.  And then I remember that I have something to say and I say it ~ through my writing, with my photography and in the profoundly intimate advocacy that I do for other women who, like me, have been silenced along the way.

And still she stands...

A beautiful, powerful, empowering example of the beauty created by the stardust in the Universe that is Christine. Each fierce woman I know has this in her. We all do. Find it, own it, embrace it, share it.

Find Your Fierce!

And as always, I am here for you. I'm an ear, a partner in crime (metaphorically speaking of course), and of course, a boudoir photographer.

585 Magazine - Getting its Fierce on for January!

I'm having a lovely holiday with my best friend Lisa, our four kiddos are giggling over music in the background, and my love is at my side (if Lisa likes him, he's in like Flynn ;)). It's all pretty much perfect, couldn't possibly get better, right? Wrong! Lisa gets a text from one of her friends 'Tell Teri I need to do one of her sessions after seeing her article in 585!' YES! I've been patiently (maybe not so patiently) waiting for this issue to come out.

A little background into this story: I had a fantastic writer come into my studio and do a session. She wrote about her experience and Jane Farr, Editor-in-Chief loved the article, so we were a go! Then came the task of choosing images to use. I have so many gorgeous women entrust me with helping them Find Their Fierce! I was thrilled with the number of clients who were willing to have their images used in a local article. Each of these women, who had come to me with a bit of trepidation, found after their session that they LOVED the way they looked. They had found their fierce, and believe me, no one can take that away from them.

'Find Your Fierce!' You'll see that over and over again on my website, on my Facebook page, you'll hear it from me when I speak. I am a huge fan of women finding their fierce, in whatever way works for them. I also believe a Boudoir Session is one of the most cathartic, self loving ways to find your own fierce, embracing the beauty and sexuality that is you. During your session you are pampered by my fantastic hair and makeup artist, Valerie Schaubroeck. Then we move on to your session creating gorgeous images of you while you are reminded that you are, without a doubt a gorgeous, sensual, powerful, and fierce woman.

Embrace this year as YOUR year to Find Your Fierce. If you need a bit more convincing, read the 585 article and find a better understanding of what a Boudoir Session can mean to you.

Find the full article here: 585 Magazine - In the bedroom

Find Ciao Bella Boudoir (and your fierce) here: Ciao Bella Boudoir

Of course, not all of the gorgeous women who were happy to share their Ciao Bella Boudoir images of them Finding Their Fierce were in the article, so I'm sharing this image here and telling you -

Find Your Fierce!

Make this year the year you celebrate you. The year you fully realize how beautiful, powerful and sexy you are. The year you decide that only you are the perfect awesomeness that is exactly, perfectly, FIERCELY you!

Oh, and for the record, Lisa likes my love, so this year is not only going to be fierce, but also filled with love. Happy New Year all my fierce lovelies! May your 2016 be amazing!

Finding your fierce, men need it too!

I recently did a talk for a group of Photographers in Connecticut called 'Find Your Fierce'. Being a Boudoir photographer who focuses much of my time on women, and of course, being a woman myself, I can speak of the feminine side of finding your fierce, well, fiercely! But I realized putting my talk together that I needed to reach men as well. About a week prior to my talk I was speaking with a great friend of mine about what he's looking for in a woman, being that he is an attractive, successful, intelligent man who happens to be single, I wanted to help him out. I know so many amazing single women! But in talking to him I learned so much about the male psyche, how men are truly feeling the same way women are, they just don't always vocalize it. They're insecure with their looks, and their bodies in every way women are. They need to find their fierce as much as women do.

I have also been working with a publisher to provide better images of men for books. It seems there is a bit of a lack of great male photography. And when you look on forums for models and photographers, sure enough it happens to be mostly female models everyone is looking for. Where are the great photographers of men? There are a few, Michael Stokes being one of my absolute favorites at the moment. But by and large, there aren't that many opportunities for men in our area. I've decided I'm going to change that. I'm starting a series of male portraits and I am very excited to share the first in that series. My first model has never modeled professionally before and was a blast to work with. (and don't worry! I won't feature only perfectly handsome, fit, young men. I'm looking for character!)

Introducing Michael M. Enjoy!

Connections, this is all about beautiful, sensual connections...

The connections you make in life are so incredibly important. They can make or break you. They can help you grow, enable you to see yourself in new ways, make you feel safe and loved. Those connections can make you know, without a doubt, that with your partner at your side, you can take on the world. This is one of those connections.

I've been wanting to do add Couple's Boudoir sessions to my website for quite some time. Finding the right couple, a couple willing to share that side of themselves with the world, took a bit of time. When I met J + H, I knew I'd found the right couple. They are loving, sweet, free, and so fierce. He adores the ferocity she has, and she adores everything about him. Their comfort level with each other is mesmerizing. This is what a couple's session is about for me, that intimacy, that comfort and love that binds us to one another. I adore them both for trusting me and their willingness to share. Here are two sneak peeks. Enjoy!

PS My job is, to put it simply, quite freaking awesome.

Finding MY Fierce!

Yes, I too need to periodically find my fierce, remind myself of that deep seeded ferocity which I know is there, but sometimes seem to misplace. I have to remind myself of who I am and what I want. I need to reinvent myself, find my ground and hold it.

The first place I started to work on that was with my website. My website has not represented me for a bit now. It was lovely, and showed lovely images, but it didn't feel Fierce. And no, my website is not who I am, but it's definitely a reflection of me. So I've been working hard along side my amazing web guy, Josh Currier of Neon Thoughts to recreate my site and have it reflect me and what I believe in. I believe in YOU! I believe in your ferocity. I believe that every woman deserves to be able to walk into a room and feel confident in who she is. I want to help you remind yourself of that. You have it in you, you may just need to find where you have hidden it. I'd love to help you do just that.

Check out my new site! Ciao Bella Boudoir

I will also be starting to speak about Boudoir Photography and finding your fierce this April. I am so excited to start this new adventure!

And one final way I've pushed myself was to submit to a print competition. What I love about print competitions is that these are not based on how pretty your model is, but in the technical merit of the image. I chose a black and white, high key image. My model was of course lovely. The gorgeous Marie sat for me. She is perfection and certainly has the ferocity I admire. But to  get the tones as they needed t be, the posing just right and the edit perfect, that takes skill. So much of my work is never seen. I submitted my work and waited. We went to the WPPI conference in Las Vegas, a photographer's conference where the judging would take place. The day arrived when the images that won would be put on display. I was so nervous walking around, looking at all the work. I rounded a corner and there she was. My Marie, with a silver ribbon. Holy crap! Seriously! It was such a HUGE honor to see that! To receive such validation from an incredibly talented group of world renowned photographers is beyond words.

So here she is, Miss Marie, looking fierce and lovely.

Find Your Fierce!

I watched this video and all I could say was OH HELL YES!

Ladies, get it, claim it, OWN it! We women are amazing creatures of power. We have power in our minds, we have power in our hearts, we have power in our souls, and we have power in our bodies.

Do not underestimate yourself. You are Beautiful, Powerful and Amazing. You Are FIERCE!

This video made me so proud to be a woman. This is perfection. This is why I photograph women. To help them find their fierce. It's not in the photos, it's in you. You'll find it before you leave my studio, but you will not forget it. That's the feeling I want you to remember when you walk into a room, when you feel uneasy or frightened, when you are challenged.

You are fierce. Find it, claim it, own it.

FIND YOUR FIERCE.

Ciao!

Celebrating a Woman's Beauty and Power with a Gorgeous Blonde

She sent me a message asking "Should I keep my hair natural and wild or tame it?" My answer was natural and wild, of course! We get wrapped up everyday in what is ideal for everyone else, but forget to consider what is ideal for us? What makes YOU feel beautiful, what makes YOU feel powerful? The sexiness that will shine from every pore of your being comes from those two feelings. A woman empowered by her own beauty and power will empower those around her, she does not need to be told she is 'sexy' by anyone else or on anyone else's terms. My goal with every one of my sessions is to help each woman realize her beauty, her power and to leave her session with those feelings. I want every woman to know those feelings and carry them with her out into the world.

This woman? She came to me already there, already full of her own power and beauty. It was a complete pleasure working with her. I fed off her energy and she off mine. There is nothing like it in the world: two creative souls working together to create magic. Miss Fredua was a natural, wild beauty and it was my pleasure creating gorgeous images with her!

What makes you feel beautiful, powerful and sexy? A session at Ciao Bella Boudoir may be just what you need. ;)

Celebrating Beauty...

I'm a day late on National Women's Day, but this image is one I adore. It's from a recent shoot with one of my favorite models, Marie Vaccarello. She is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. She represents a strong woman, a woman with confidence and beauty, a woman with intelligence and kindness. She represents everything a woman should be. There are more images from this session to follow, but I wanted to post one to celebrate all women. We as women need to learn to celebrate ourselves, our very essence, every day. You, yes you, are beautiful, powerful and sexy! Embrace it. Makeup for this shoot was by Ashley Luna. Copyright of all images are expressly those of Teri Fiske of Hanlon-Fiske Studios, INC.

Now for something a little different. ;)

You know that I get to shoot gorgeous women, beautiful babies and stunning weddings, but this week I had the pleasure of working with a lovely male model (and one of my favorite muses, Miss Bonnie). This was a blast! So here's a little bit of eye candy for all of you gorgeous women. Enjoy!

Alex was a blast to work with and quite a natural model. I'm looking forward to working more with him in the future.

Beauty in mommas, babies and gorgeous beauties who graced my studio...

I have had the pleasure of photographing amazing mommas, babies and beauties of late. I am always honored that such beautiful people trust me both for themselves, and their babies. Remember to celebrate your beauty and all the beauty that surrounds you every day.

We'll start with beautiful Miss K and her happy baby. Miss K has found the beauty in life and has learned to celebrate it with her daughter every day. She is making her family incredibly proud.

Then Mr. O and his family came in to see me in his first week. He was so serene the entire session. What a gorgeous boy!

And finally, a little sex power to round out my month! Goodness Miss J is a stunner! She is 5'11" and wore 4 inch heels. I love this girl! She exemplifies my tag line of 'Beautiful, Powerful AND Sexy! She embraces how amazing she is and it's palpable! I'm looking forward to more shoots like these.

My absolute favorite, seriously, this is so gorgeous, so mysterious, love everything about this. :)

YES! Oh YES! ;)

OK, I know it's not pc to toot one's own horn, but I feel good! As a matter of fact, I feel GREAT! This month is my birthday month. My 43rd birthday month, to be exact. I've known people who freaked out when they turned 30, I didn't. I thoroughly enjoyed it, honestly. I've known people who REALLY freaked out at 40. Again, didn't really bother me. 43? That one seemed a little rougher. Maybe it's the increased frequency with which I have to visit my favorite stylist: Valerie Schaubroeck to get my white stripe back to my 'natural' shades of red and violet ;). Maybe it's the weather. But at the beginning of birthday month (yes, I celebrate birthday month!) I was, for a lack of better terms, 'feeling my age'. So I'm doing a few things to remedy that. I'm drinking more...water, that is. I love coffee, I love to run around like mad, I love staying busy. Combine all those things and one forgets to hydrate. So now I have a lovely pitcher of water with cucumber and lemon to drink all day. It's pretty and it makes me feel better.

The other thing I did? Well, if you're going to talk the talk, you damn well best walk that walk! I'm constantly telling women that they need to do a Boudoir session for themselves! I have had many clients come to me to do a session for their significant other. By the time they leave the studio, they are feeling EMPOWERED! They feel strong, they feel beautiful, and they definitely feel sexy! They now realize the importance of that session for THEM. The opportunity came for me to do that for myself when Troy Smith from Subculture Magazine asked me to submit photos and a quick blurb. Being a Boudoir photographer, I could not simply send in a nice head shot. So, Michael Hanlon (my consummate partner in crime, business, life and love) helped me out a bit. Aaaannnnnddd, we submitted this:

OH YES! Take THAT 43! ;) That felt GOOD! Seriously ladies, I am not superficial, I don't walk around thinking 'Shit, I'm hot', but that photo? Oh yes. I feel it! I needed that little boost. I deserved that little boost! We all do!

So what exactly are you waiting for? Permission? Here it is, I give you permission to celebrate YOU! Do it! A Ciao Bella Boudoir session is exactly what the doctor ordered. ;) YES! Oh YES!

A bit of Hollywood Glamour with a very modern girl...

Bonnie is definitely a beautiful, powerful, sexy woman. She embodies all of the grace of any Hollywood starlet you can conjure up: Lillian Gish, Marleen Dietrich, Veronica Lake, Jane Russell; she just has it. We were thrilled that Bonnie was available to work with us and got started planning the Hanlon-Fiske Studios, INC old Hollywood style shoot with wedding dresses from Heart to Heart Bridal.

As always, Valerie Schaubroeck did the makeup and honestly, I think she knocked it out of the park with this one! I'm looking forward to our upcoming Ciao Bella Boudoir sessions not only here, but in NYC as well.

We are all thrilled with the results and think you will be as well.

On another note, we (Hanlon Weddings) love that we have the space and gear available to offer a shoot like this to any of our brides. While the 'Bridal Shoot' is not as popular here in New York, it's something Mike and I love! We've had couples do 'Day After' sessions as well which is another way to get more amazing images of just the two of you!

Ciao Bella!

Beautiful, Powerful, Sexy.

If you know my brand, you know that my mantra is 'Beautiful, Powerful, Sexy'. I know that when a woman feels beautiful and powerful she is simply and amazingly sexy. She feels it. Everyone around her feels it. She can take on the world and and tame it, should she choose to. I want every woman to feel that. It's the reason I do Boudoir Sessions. I want every woman to celebrate her beauty, her power and also her sexy!

I just came back from NYC and more amazing Boutique Hotel Boudoir Sessions. My NYC sessions are in an amazing hotel in NYC, gorgeous location, gorgeous room, gorgeous women. You can't go wrong! My morning session was one of the fiercest women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Miss A is one of the most beautiful women, inside and out I know. I always love my clients, but A and I immediately hit it off like old friends. She admitted to being a bit nervous before her session. Worrying, as we all do from time to time, that she was not going to look her best for this session. That she wouldn't feel beautiful enough, powerful enough or sexy enough. My first image of her immediately changed her mind. Miss A gave me permission to use her images on my blog immediately. She wants women to see these and be inspired to do their own Boudoir Sessions and celebrate just how amazing we all are!

The first of these images was the very first shot I took of Miss A. I think you can understand why she realized her fierce-ness was alive and well and she need not worry. ;)

Beautiful

Powerful

Sexy
There is no reason to wait to do your session. Celebrate how beautiful, powerful and sexy you are now.

Manifesto for a Boudoir, Wedding, Portrait Photographer

Hmmm, a manifesto? Yup, a manifesto. I'm not great at writing. Nope, not at all. I'm one of those people who tend to write in a train of thought, throw it all on the page, kind of fashion. Not the easiest to read. Freud would most likely LOVE to read my writings and dissect my psyche, but for everyone else, it's hard to muddle through (lost yet?) my writing. To that end I'm trying out a writing course of sorts from Kristen at Brand Camp. I love the way Kristen writes. I love that I get such a sense of who she is from her writing. My first assignment from her 'Circus Circus' was to write a manifesto, 3 times.

So, here are my first 3.

1. I want you to see how beautiful you are. I see people every day and see how beautifully stunning they are. I also see how few of them realize this fact. I want to show you that beauty. From the way you look at the camera when I talk about the things you love, to the way you look at each other when I cover you with her veil. When you forget that your supposed to be 'on' and can just be is when your beauty shines through.

2. You only get to experience this life once. Even if you do the same task over and over, each experience with it will have something different about it. It's all those differences that make like beautiful, exciting, momentous. I love seeing those moments, being part of them with you. I love that I get to use my art to show you just how beautiful those moments are.

3. Photography reminds me to see things differently. To notice the details and remember how the moment felt. It reminds me of the beauty in a look, a hand held, a shift of the hips, a tear, a smile, a frosting covered face, of newborn skin held by work worn hands, a kiss. It reminds me that beauty is everywhere, if we only take the time to see it.

I love what I do. I am passionate about my job, my art and you. :)
